Starting in September 2014, P.S. 40 partnered with Wellness in the Schools (WITS) to bring healthier lunches to the cafeteria and to help educate families and students about nutrition. For the 2016-2017 school year, a WITS-trained chef will be stationed in the cafeteria during lunch several times a week to help prepare menu items and additional scratch-cooked lunch items. The cost of school lunches will remain the same.
Instead of fried food, students will see more fresh fruits and vegetables and an expanded daily salad bar. In addition, WITS will run cooking classes for the students, highlighting a seasonal ingredient to teach children how to prepare healthy, delicious food.
