This year P.S. 40 has been chosen to participate in the NYC Department of Education’s Organics Collection program, which was created to add composting to NYC’s public schools.┬áTo aid in the DOE’s efforts to make our schools more ecologically friendly, P.S. 40’s Eco Team members will be helping the students organize their trash into the correct garbage, recycling, or compost bin, and our cafeteria will be moving away from styrofoam trays to compostable pulp trays.

The Organics Collection program was piloted in 2012 – 2013 in 90 public schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. With the addition of 360 schools in those boroughs during the 2013 – 2014 school year and now the expansion this school year into Bronx and Queens and the addition of over 400 schools in 250 buildings, the Organics Collection program will be in 40% of DOE schools.
